It's like moving into a less than ideal house that you can own forever versus moving into something that looks more like your dreamhouse that you don't really own.
I'd say this is not the correct analogy: the dreamhouse you can't own has cameras and microphones in every room connected to the real owner. You can't check or change the smoke detectors yourself, but you have to rely on the real owner to check and replace them, to protect you.
You're completely helpless if you do not break your contract and all information about your life is used by the owner to its own best interest.
